ECKLEBURG

2004-09-11 - 7:02 p.m.

Remember in April when I mentioned that everyone was pregnant? (http://eckleburg.diaryland.com/040426_81.html)

By “everyone,” I meant my sister, Linsey, and two of my best friends, Tracy and Traci (no… really…).

Now almost everyone is a mom! Since April, Linsey had her baby – little Emma Alison. Then Tracy with a “y” had her baby – Alice Jane. Now Traci with an “i” is awaiting her baby, Audrey.

There has been much ado about pregnancy and birth and babies. I’m surrounded by women with babies. This area is saturated with toddlers, and there are pregnant woman all over the place at work.

I’m happy for everyone. Really, I am. And the stories about the baby-making and –carrying and –birthing and –raising process are kinda like train wrecks … I can’t seem to look away or stop listening.

But I must admit that I am moderately freaked out by all of this activity. My mind is plagued with baby thoughts. Names and clothes and plans for rearing (including the bizarre things that we will make our future children do so that they learn good sense and work ethics and smarts, like sewing, dancing, budgeting, and entertaining us with dancing and singing…).

I think what’s causing my stress is timing. Thinking about kids in the past never caused me any stress because there was no pressure from timing - having kids was so far in the future. But the time is coming… sneaking closer and closer… my friends are all being overtaken by it. It is all but inevitable, and it is looming.

But, as I keep saying to eckleburg, people seem to really like their kids, so it must be worth it!
