ECKLEBURG

2004-07-19 - 10:15 a.m.

Finally, we are getting back into dancing! Last weekend we discovered a new dance studio that was (relatively) close to our house and checked it out. It was good, although a bit on the expensive side for what it was, and there were hardly any people there.

So this past Saturday we went to a swing dance at an old amusement park in Maryland called Glen Echo. The amusement park was built and ¡§peaked¡¨ in the 1930¡¦s, died a slow death, and then eventually was taken over by the national park service as a historical landmark and restored. Most of the park is a fantastic Art Deco style, and each of the old buildings have been taken over by different public-subsidized art places ¡V they have glass blowing, ceramics studios, painting, photography labs, and, most importantly, it has a fantastic authentic 1930¡¦s Ballroom done in an art deco imitation of Spanish style. It is beautiful (although not air-conditioned ¡V in true 1930¡¦s style).

The dance was one of the biggest we had been to ¡V with a begging swing lesson at 8-9 with great instructors and then a dance until midnight. I would say there were 300 people there ¡V they had to stop people from entering because they were at capacity.

Grumblecake and I danced and danced, although we were absolutely rusty and not that terribly impressive. But I got the bug again and we are going to take some lessons again and get back in the swing of things ļ
