ECKLEBURG

2004-07-13 - 10:10 p.m.

grumble grumble grumble

life good for most part

work pretty much the same, but maybe getting better (or is that just a dangling carrot? either way, the view is better with the carrot there...)

social life looking up with multiple happy hours planned on the horizon

time to pull the old shoes back out of the closet - we may have re-discovered ballroom

more fun travel coming soon... but how will we afford it?

about to be aunt and uncle again - come on down, baby emma!

house still selling... damn title company! give us our money!!

we bought the coolest old console radio. i'll let eckleburg give you all the details as i will undoubtedly screw them all up. i'll tell you the story, though:

eckleburg got his heart set on attending a real, live country auction this past weekend. we are in the market for a nice bed and a kitchen table (our rewards for patiently selling our house), but are way too cheap and picky to just wander down to ethan allen and buy their most popular model.

the idea of getting a sturdy, old, near-antique, four-poster for a great price was getting him all excited. i resisted, feeling sure we'd be surrounded by one of the following:

1) auction professionals

2) men without teeth

3) lots of old crap no one wants

i was right about two of the three. there were obviously a lot of people there who knew what they were doing. but they all had teeth. many of them purchased many crappy things (for big dollars) that were of questionable taste and value.

one of my big concerns was impulse shopping. in fact, i remember saying, "we shouldn't buy anything during our first trip. i don't want to randomly buy something we don't need."

but then we got there, and amidst the old linens and random books and lamps (and more and more lamps), there were three things we wanted so badly: an amazing dining room set with a hand-carved cherry wood table (seating 6-12 with two leaves) and 10 matching chairs, a great four-poster bed, and a beautiful old console radio.

we bid on all three items, but were nowhere near winning the two we actually needed... instead, we won our impulse purchase - a 1939 console radio! it is soooo cool. eck will tell you more and we'll post pictures to a secret location in the near future.............
