ECKLEBURG 2004-04-04 - 8:59 p.m. Yeay Cherryblossoms! Lesley and I went down to see the cherryblossoms yesterday -- there was a parade and then a big Japanese streetfestival planned, so we thought it would be an excelent time to go. Of course, we got up too late to get to the parade and couldn't find the japanese festival. We did however, find the FDR memorial, and it is amazing!!! Very modern, with lots of water and trees and no domed coppolas. We also liked the Jefferson Memorial, which has a hidden basement with timelines and dioramas and everything. Oh yeah, the cherry trees are very nice too. Driving home from the festival, Lesley was realy sleepy, so she nodded off in the passenger seat while I was driving. Now, at one part of the drive, the higway curves to the right, which is a good thing because if it had continued going straight it would run into a nice neighborhood. An in this neighborhood are two streetlights that, to any unconcious person dozing off in the passenger seat, are perfectly spaced to look like the headlights of an oncoming car. Now, this "optical illusion" can apparently cause an unconcious passenger to sudenly jerk awake, scream "oh my god" and start to push the driver's hand so as to swerve the car away from the imagined "headlights." This is very surprising to the driver, who is not aware that streetlights and headlights are so easily confused. So we swerve into the next lane, which is completely empty fortunately, and luckily found the whole thing funny.
